David Everitt owns Back of Beyond Books at 83 N. Main Street in Moab. The official staff-picks page says he rolled into town in 1995 in a leaky 1979 VW van and later ran environmental education programs, spent eight years as chief of staff to the mayor of Salt Lake City, and had a couple of stints as Moab’s city manager before buying the shop.

The store calls itself a literary oasis in the desert since 1990. The name comes from Seldom Seen Smith’s outfitting company in Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. The shelves lean toward geography, archaeology, natural history, and guidebooks of the American Southwest and the Colorado Plateau, with new, used, and rare titles plus western ephemera. There is a fiction section, a children’s room, YA, games, and gifts.

The shop hosts author events and in-store music. Summer hours posted on the official store page (beginning February 27, 2026) are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
